AT THE HEART OF CARIBBEAN ART

Devon Garcia

Devon Garcia, a self taught wood carver, was born in Portland, Jamaica. While he always liked to draw, his first love is carving. He explains how one day he picked up a piece of wood, sharpened a screw driver and began to carve. That was it. A few years ago, he was introduced to papier Mache by Lois Lake Sherwood, who was familiar with his wood carving, and encouraged him to broaden his portfolio with a new skill. Later, he learned techniques from the professionals who taught at a workshop in downtown Kingston. Garcia has achieved numerous awards at the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition, Including 2 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals.  His first major exhibition took place in 2000 at the Revolution Gallery.
